Adolescent girls and women continue to be the most vulnerable in our society as the traditional attitudes of men persist and they resist the changes taking place around them. Although the women in the communities around TEWFI’s area of focus are involved in economic development activities, dependency on men continues.
The women are disadvantaged because they lack knowledge and education since girls are not educated beyond puberty. For the first time TEWFI has appointed a female community Social Worker to target women and adolescent girls in the community. The aim is to empower them with knowledge, which is essential for eliminating the problem of economic dependency. The participation of women and the adolescent girls in these activities has been impressive and they have demonstrated a keen interest in the educational programmes.
As a part of our Women Empowerment programme, TEWFI has organized International Women’s Day. As has been the purpose of recognizing the International Women’s day is to recognize the Economic, Political and the Social achievements of the women, TEWFI has also organized this programme through competitions, group discussions etc.
More than 50 women in the community enthusiastically participated in the programme.
We have created awareness among the participants in the areas such as status of women in the society, basic rights of the women, protecting them from getting exploited, help line for women, prevention of domestic violence act etc.
This programme was organized in the on 8th March 2010 and we are planning to organize this programme every year on 8th March.
