TEWFI has recently acquired some land on which it plans to build a dedicated technical / occupational training centre. Such a Vocational Training Centre (VTC) is what the neighbouring communities have been requesting for a while. TEWFI has currently applied to the State Government's Ministry of Youth Affairs for funding to start training programmes.
The Government has assured TEWFI that if TEWFI is able to provide a Centre for training with accommodation facilities for trainers, it will fund ongoing vocational training for target groups in the community. In addition to the women / girls vocational training and the men / boys vocational training already in place, villagers have made various requests for training in various fields which include:
- Boat engine repair (currently local fisherman travel long distances at high personal cost for this service)
- Mobile phone repair
- Radio and television repair
- Fish pickling
In the long term, it is hoped that VTC, in conjunction with the Vicki Standish e-Education Centre, may be able to offer a wider range of courses for the people who complete their schooling to a minimum of 10th Standard but are unable to travel to distant centres for further training. By offering training courses in fields such as nursing, teaching, basic healthcare, childcare, care of the elderly, business management, secretarial work, IT, carpentry, masonry, roofing, automotive care, refrigeration, electronics, telecommunications and other vocations, the employment prospects for the local people will be vastly improved.
