Quality
of the drinking water
TEWOAF
has recently linked up with Rotary Monash in Victoria, to
improve the quality of the drinking water at the Uluru Children's
Home. Once this project is completed, the Home should be
able to independently provide clean fresh drinking water
for more than 80 residents.
Two
new dormitories
In 2005 work started on the first of two new accommodation
wings to house children made destitute by the 2004 Tsunami.
The house is due to open in October 2006 and the second
to be completed later in the year.
Permanent Computer Centre
We are
working closely with Engineers Without Borders to build
and maintain a permanent IT centre for the children at the
Uluru Children's Home and the local Alampara village. The
project will be the first of its kind in the region and
is expected to vastly improve the educational and employment
opportunities for the children both during and post school.
It will also offer the local community a unique opportunity
to access vital medical, educational and other information
relating to their daily lives, eg weather forecasts, national
and state government support etc. With appropriate funding
it is envisaged that the centre will not only be used for
IT and library facilities but also host seminars, conferences,
art displays, movie screenings, theatre and music performances.
Please visit www.ewb-aus.org.au
for more information on this project.
Cricket / Playing Ground
World Expeditions is proposing to bring a group of clients
to Uluru Children’s Home in December 2006 to help
us build a cricket and playing field in the village. We
anticipate that our ground will be used not only by our
own children and staff but also by children from the surrounding
area. For details of the World Expeditions trip see http://www.worldexpeditions.com.au.
Secondary School
By
July 2007 we hope to have the first classroom ready for
those children currently completing their final year at
Alampara Primary School. Due to the lack of quality education
in the area, TEWOAF intends to create a learning centre
to provide all children, regardless of their background,
with quality education to give them the opportunities they
deserve.
Coastal Eco-education Centre
In
association with CERES environmental park
(www.ceres.org.au),
TEWOAF hopes to establish a Coastal Environment Education
Centre on land adjacent to Uluru Children’s Home,
As well as showcasing the Biodiversity of the this particular
coastal region, the Centre would hopefully become an Eco
Park showing appropriate renewable technologies, already
shown in the nearby international community of Auroville.
It would also provide facilities to educate local people
about organic farming techniques
Community
Development
TEWOAF
is working on a number of projects to expand and enhance
its current work in community development. Further promotion
of self-help groups and microfinance initiatives will greatly
increase the self-sufficiency of this small rural community.
TEWOAF also plans to open additional learning centres such
as a trade/TAFE school in the future. These projects will
all involve working in collaboration with members of the
local community on ways to promote sustainability in the
area.
