There have been a number of recent articles in The Hindu and in other publications focused upon the issue of eyesight: “Blindness takes a heavy toll in India, where the rate of childhood blindness is three times that of Western nations”.
This problem may be preventable if a parent gives the right care to their children. The community around TEWFI seem indifferent to the eye care of their children. Most of them do not have be aware of the need to have a regular eye check. Our Foundation has been organizing annual eye checks for the children. This has benefited the children around the Edaikazhinadu Panchayat. The children, the women, and the adolescent girls in the community were also taught about eye care. As a result the community is aware of the importance of having regular checks.
TEWFI has organize this Eye Check up camp for the communities in the Edaikazhinadu Panchayat in conjunction with Aravind Eye Hospital Pondichery. This camp was conducted on 29th of Jan 2010.
The medical team sent by the Aravind Eye Hospital has screened 198 patients. 15 out of them were identified with early cataract and they were advised for cataract surgery later. 19 patients have been advised for cataract surgery and 14 of them were taken to their hospital for cataract surgery at free of cost. On 26th Feb 2011, the medical team have come to review the patients who have undergone cataract surgery. Click here to view the feed back letter of the Eye camp from Aravind Eye Hospital.
TEWFI would like to continue organizing such camps in future also in the Edaikazhinadu Panchayat.
