Better health practices are more likely to lead to a longer and productive life. As part of the Post Tsunami Health Care and Research Project (PTHCRP), a Health Awareness campaign is run by TEWFI at the Alamparai Middle School (AMS), which TEWFI has already assisted with basic provisions. This campaign extends upon the Tamil Nadu Government syllabus to address the medical issues seen in the community.
Every week, a class is held at AMS teaching health and hygiene related topics. This class is conducted by the community nurse and social workers employed by TEWFI. To coincide with the beginning of these Health Awareness classes, the children in the 6th to 8th standards have been removing garbage from the school premises and its surroundings under the direction of the environment teacher at the Pitchandikulam Bio Resource Centre and the social worker from TEWFI.
In addition, a TEWFI community social worker conducts daily physical education classes at AMS. These highly-popular classes teach children important motor skills. Cricket, ball games, handball, athletics and soccer are just some of the regular activities run. Yoga and relaxation techniques (both practice and theory) are also taught to children, as these skills will undoubtedly prove useful to deal with stress later on in life. During 2007, an intramural sports competition was held in memory of K Kamaraj’s Birthday (former Chief Minister of Tamil Nadu; 15 July 1903 – 2 October 1975).
