The three villages around Alamparai each had separate child rights or women's development centres. These were brought together under a single Life Skills and Child Rights Education Programme.
Currently, classes are conducted for children on a variety of topics including:
- Moral values
- Coping with fear and other emotions
- Self-esteem and personality development
- Decision making
- Time management and goal setting
- Handling and solving problems
- The rights of children
- Child abuse
These basic life skills and child rights are taught not only in a traditional manner, but also via the use of games, skits, role plays, group discussions, and puppet shows. In particular, as part of this programme, a puppet show was organised in early 2008 in conjunction with Child Line. The topics highlighted included Child Trafficking and Abuse. Some 150 children, including those from the Uluru Children’s Home (UHC) attended.
In future, this important programme will be held at the UNDP Women's Centre.
