LIC Micro-insurance Scheme
 

After the devastation of the 2004 Tsunami, as part of its Post Tsunami Health Care and Research Project, TEWFI was selected by the Confederation of NGOs in Rural India (CNRI) to implement a micro-insurance scheme. This sustainable livelihood scheme is aimed at creating employment and providing low-cost insurance to vulnerable people.  Many families are now financially protected in the case of injury, disability and death. Every month, each person in the scheme pays a small amount (Rs100) to one of 6 agents (locally trained youth of the community). These agents then pass across the funds to the LIC office in Chennai. The process is monitored and supervised by TEWFI community social workers.

Rumours of another tsunami prompted not only fishing, but also farming communities, to become involved. Currently, there are 125 people signed up in the scheme, and TEWFI is actively trying to increase this number.
