Opportunities for individuals in the community are somewhat constrained by their English speaking ability. Most tertiary educational institutions, including the highly-rated universities in India, teach in the English language. Many business transactions are also conducted in English. In addition, the central government uses English as the medium of communication. In addition to working with local schools and providing tuition classes for the children of Uluru Children's Home, TEWFI provides English classes for those interested to learn among the local community.
Currently these classes are provided four days each week with two classes a day. Most of the attendees are children who interact enthusiastically. The classes are conducted by our volunteers in the evenings. In addition, those in the community may learn English via computer facilitated learning at the Vicki Standish e-Education Centre.
Previously, English classes were held specifically targetting the adults, the illiterate, school dropouts and youth groups (aged between 18 to 30 years).
If you are able to speak and read and write English and Tamil (whatever your proficiency) and would like to help those in the community, please see our Volunteer page.
