Garbage pervades the landscape in many populated areas across India. Waste management is therefore an extremely important issue for not only the community which TEWFI focuses on, but across all of India. As important as it is to remove this garbage, is the importance of providing an understanding of the long term consequences of it of waste management.
After the tsunami, the waste problem only worsened along the affected areas. Therefore, as part of the Post Tsunami Health Care and Research Project (PTHCRP), TEWFI included the important issue of waste management in its list of endeavours. So far, clean up campaigns have been held, and more long-term measures are being explored.
World Environment Cleaning Day 2007 was deliberately selected to clean up three surrounding villages during September 2007: Othukattamman Kuppam, Thandumariamman Kuppam and Kadapakkam Kuppam. Groups of young boys and girls within each village helped to clean up their respective village. In Othukattamman Kuppam, some 20 youth groups participated. Many of these campaigns were done in conjunction with Pitchandikulam Bio Resource Centre - Auroville.
Following the success of this initiative, TEWFI is working together with people from Exnora to develop a Waste Management Awareness Programme. This, so far has included a documentary film on the impact of contamination on the environment and discussions on how waste is managed successfully in other villages.
While this awareness programme continues to grow and reach out to more people, yet it is desperately seeking funds and expertise. If you would like to help us with waste management, please visit our donations page, or contact us.
